The Mark of the Golden Dragon, L.A. Meyer


Main characters:
James "Jaimy" Emerson Fletcher: He is Jacky's true love and betrothed. Driven mad by her death, he becomes the famous Highwayman.


Captain Lord Richard Allen: He comforts Jacky and helps connect her to officials to free Jaimy from charges of murder. He offers her comfort while she mourns Jaimy's new state of mind.


John Higgins: He is Jacky's best friend, confident, and caretaker. He is like a parent to Jacky.


Jacky Faber: Main character, becomes a pirate and tries to blend in with the other pirates in order to escape from them


Main Conflict:Jacky Faber is a teenage girl trying to blend in with a bunch of pirates in order to escape back to her hometown in Europe. She eventually ends up trying to reunite with a friend close to home and he ends up being an evil pirate. In the end however, her friend ends up trying to kill her but she kills him.

“Davy lets fly an oath and storms out of the hold. We hear his fist hit the wall as he leaves. you really are an evil girl, says Jaimy. I know, I murmur. I shall have to pay.”


If I take a tumble, I'll mae quite a splash, but at least I won't smash against the deck and make a mess. Still be dead, though.


Historical Perspective:


Mary Read- Was a famous female pirate that the main character was based off of.


Talked about the final stage of the golden age of piracy, which took place in 1716-1730


Mentioned in various accounts of the hanging seamen which were pirates that were hung off on sea rocks above the water to warn other pirates to not enter their waters.


Overall success of the book:
This book was very successful as it grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept the interest throughout the book and had a multitude of historical events.


Author’s facts and statistics:
Earned a B.A. in English literature.

Joined the U.S ARMY during the vietnam war.

  1. I like how Jack tries to blend in with other pirates, and then becomes corrupt like one. Both of our books were set on the sea in the vast oceans.

  2. This can relate to my book pretty well. Jack was changed into something she would have thought she never was. In my book before Mary took the throne she was sweet and kind hearted but when she took the throne power did somewhat change her and she executed many people.
