Main Conflict
The book Mary, Bloody Mary is about king Henry VIII and his daughter Mary. Mary is heartbroken when her dad King Henry loses interest in her mom( Queen Catherine) for his mistress (Lady Anne). She is then forced to take care of the kid they have and she is lost in confusion and depression. When King Henry sent Mary away for a while she hears from one of her ladies named Susan that her father is falling for Lady Anne. This is when Mary is really worried and could not wait to see her parents again to know the truth. King Henry wants to wed Lady Anne but is unable to divorce Catherine so he banishes her to the North and with Mary shocked her mom tells her that whatever happens do not give up the throne. King Henry defies the church until he gains power to legalize his divorce to Catherine and marriage to Lady Anne shortly after they have a baby that takes Marys right to the throne and Mary is then forced to be the kids servant.
Three Important Quotes
“Anne was seized by Cromwell's men, who took her to the Tower by barge in broad daylight so that everyone could witness her humiliation. She was charged with adultery, incest, and treason”. I chose this quote to show that Lady Anne was later executed only after 1000 days after being queen. The king did not waste anytime moving on from her either and soon he married again. Lady Anne and five other men were executed.
“Suddenly I thought of Anne Boleyn and of the way my father had looked at her.” Mary does not believe her father wants Lady Anne until she sees it for herself. This quote is important because in history King Henry the VIII many wives and in this case you see how it made his mother's daughter feel towards his actions.
“He had argued with the pope, tried to persuade a council of churchmen, and threatened my mother, and none had bent too his will.” This quote is crucial because in history King Henry was known as the king that defied the church. This showed the type of king he was and how he would stop at nothing to have what he wanted. He married many women and had many children.
Historical Perspective
Historically King Henry the VIII was the king of England until he died. He was known for defying the pope and the church. He is also known for his multiple marriages to women.
Lady Anne was executed along with five men. She was historically accused of treason, incest, and adultery. Her execution would be forever attached too King Henry the VIII’s name because after all that was his wife.
Queen Catherine was known in history for being Henry’s first wife. The king did banish her off to the North but Queen Catherine did not budge when it came to getting the divorce. Her daughter, Mary was suppose too inherit the throne but did not due to the Kings new marriage.
Overall/Author
The book overall was very factual and interesting. It is in Mary’s view of the events that led to her finally getting the throne much later in her life. The book has great reviews and the author is well known for writing factual brilliant books. Carolyn Meyer has published over 5 historical books that are very educational and worth reading for a look at events in history of important people.
Our books were nothing alike but they shared a darker theme that came from factual, historical events and people.
