Will Rashley - The Wolving Time
- Main Characters
- Lazlo Emberek - Lazlo is the main character in the book, he is magyar and a werewolf as well. He is son to Kalman and Rita
- Kalman Emberek - Kalman is Lazlo’s father. He is a reserved character interested in the success of his farm where he keeps sheep. He is as well as Lazlo a werewolf
- Rita Emberek - Rita is married to Kalman. She is more lenient than Kalman and lets Lazlo have more liberties. Also a werewolf
- Père Raoul - A corrupt church leader who despises Lazlo and his family. He frequently burns people at the stake for small things like someone bought bread for them and the person who bought the bread’s child died, so logically the only explanation is the seller of the bread is a witch.
- Muno - Muno is a young girl who Père Raoul thought to be practicing witchcraft. She was to be burned at the stake but Père Raoul kept her as his right hand man because he knew how much she despised him. She escaped from Père Raoul 2 times and went to Lazlo both times. Later joined the Emberek family
- Marie-France - Another defectee from the church, Muno sent her to warn Lazlo not to go to the town. Lazlo did not heed her warning, however Lazlo and his family did rescue her from the church and reunited her with her uncle.
- Monsieur Lamoignan - Uncle of Marie-France. Kalman visited the town where Monsieur Lamoignan and Marie-France lived to sell goods and encountered them there. He gave Kalman very generous gifts because of Lazlo’s return of his daughter.
- Egmont - Friend of the Emberek family. He is the gatekeeper to the town of Saint Eustache, the town closest to Lazlo’s home. When the church took Lazlo and his family he defended them and told Père Raoul there must be a mistake and that he has the wrong people.
- Main Conflict
- The main conflict of the book is when the Emberek family is captured by the church.
- Lazlo caused this to happen when he accidentally growled in an intense game of primitive soccer, this raised suspicion with the people of the town.
- For a while after the soccer incident, everything was quiet after they laid low for a while, until one day, the men of Saint Eustache came to the Emberek house and took them.
- They avoided not being burned at the stake after being found guilty in a trial by shifting into werewolves, which they can do at will, and escaped.
- Quotes
- "I will make you shorter by the head." - I feel like this is the attitude of Père Raoul in a quote. The quote was said by Elizabeth I towards her council that was disagreeing with her.
- "En ma fin git mon commencement." (In my end is my beginning.) - This quote is relevant because it marks the end of Lazlo’s human life and when he became a werewolf, which happened when he entered the wolving pool. The quote was on and emblem owned by Queen Mary of the Scots, there was also a picture of her mother on the emblem.
- “A true friend freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeably.” - This quote represents Lazlo’s personality, seeing as how he was kind to all the strangers that came to him, even Père Raoul after the trial. This quote was said by William Penn about the qualities of friendship.
- Historical Perspective
- One historically accurate thing was the burning and conviction of people thought to be practicing witchcraft.
- Another historically accurate thing was the power of the church. They controlled what people did, how they did it, and when they did it.
- A final accurate thing is the practice of Lazlo and his family, being sheep farmers. It was a common job in those times.
- Success of the Book
- I think the book was overall successful.
- Author
- Patrick Jenning wrote the book after a 4th grader asked him what the “were” part of “werewolf” meant, they found it meant boy. They also found stories from the past were friendly sheep farmers would transform into wolves to negotiate with surrounding wolves in the are.
Our books were similar because the main character of my book was also tried for witchcraft and was found guilty, however, my character was later proved innocent.
